I don't think the military is irganont, far from it. The National Command Authority, I.e. the President and his advisors ahve shown a propensity for ignoring their military advisors. In spite of that interference, the military waged a brilliant campaign, AND WON IT!The military is not, nor has it ever been, a police force. They are trained to kill, and to survive. To put them in the position they are in now, between countless sectarian groups fighting each other , and our military, is asking them to do a job they are not trained for.There are rules for warfare, believe it or not, set out in the Geneva Conventions. Insurgent groups, however, don't abide by those rules. Principle among them is the concept of uniformed combatants. When everyone in the population looks the same, but belongs to different sides, it kind of makes it impossible to fight any kind of war.I recently spoke with a friend who returned from Iraq. He told me about a man he had met on many occasions and he became his friend. One day on patrol (they were protecting an oil pipeline) they came under fire from a group of insurgents. They were pinned down, and gunships were called in to attack the insurgents, many of whom were killed. When they examined the insurgent position he found the man he had known, AK in hand, dead.It's not black and white over there. Saddam Hussein is out of power. The people there can vote, watch news, eenirtaetmnnt, politics, debate, art, theatre, and not the State run "Saddam Channels" which are totally about him only. Medical care has improved considerably. So has the construction of schools. Power now reaches most everyone in the country, and they no longer experience blackouts nightly, due to Saddam Hussein. The list goes on of the freedoms these people have, that they did not have for 35 years under Saddam Hussein. So how do you figure they haven't been freed? And don't say we're there for oil.
